More people meditate today than ever before, yet it doesn’t feel like we’re any more at peace. In fact, there’s plenty of reason to believe that the opposite is true. Anxiety and depression seem to be on the increase. Does this mean that meditation doesn’t work? I don’t think so. But I do wonder whether we’re confusing the practice with the performance.
You see, meditation is often touted as a method for making us calmer, happier, more at peace, but I think this is a huge disservice to the practice. Meditation doesn’t change us, it simply reveals who we are. Meditation is time spent alone with oneself, and inevitably, that means we get to know ourselves better.
But while self knowledge is an essential first step in any attempt to improve oneself, it’s only a first step. In order to actually become calmer or happier or more at peace, we need to apply what we’ve learned in our meditation practice in our actual lives.
Mindfulness is what we do.
This is easy to understand, but it’s far from easy to do. So here we’ll be collecting stories, advice, and resources that have encouraged us to consider how we think, how we behave, and how we treat others in the world. Whether or not you have a meditation practice, I hope you’ll find something here that you find useful on the journey to whoever you want to be.
