Even though it’s basically an ad, this nugget of wisdom from Seth Godin’s blog is the truest thing I’ve read in a long time:
Education is the hustle for a credential. It exchanges compliance for certification. An institution can educate you.
This nails why it’s possible for some people to be highly educated and simultaneously as dumb as a post. Learning can’t really be achieved through compliance, it has to be an active choice, with the rewards, accountability and motivation all resting squarely on the shoulders of the learner.
Don’t get me wrong, education unquestionably has its place. But as we grow older, what really matters is that we never stop learning.
